Are you exhausted? You have pain the whole body, and you cannot understand what the problem is? If so, you may be suffering from fibromyalgia, a chronic disease that causes fatigue, sleep disturbances and diffuse pain in muscles, ligaments, and tendons.
Patients with fibromyalgia say a range of symptoms of varying intensity, which is reduced, then increased again and often resemble other diseases. For years, fibromyalgia was a little-known disease. Doctors often believed that the symptoms the patients came up with themselves or attributed them to other pathological conditions. Even today, scientists believe that it is necessary for about 5 years for development of the diagnostic algorithm of fibromyalgia.
Lab tests to determine the disease does not exist. Physicians should only rely on the complaints of the patient and examination data. To establish a diagnosis of fibromyalgia or pain the whole body, it is necessary that the patient has been the widespread pain in all four quadrants of the body for the past 3 months, and pain with pressure in 11 of the 18 specific problem areas of the body. Fibromyalgia affects about 3-6% of the US population. Women, for unknown reasons more likely to develop the disease.
Causes of fibromyalgia are not known, but scientists believe that the symptoms are due to «increasing the sensitivity of the center.» According to this theory, people with the disease are observed increased sensitivity to pain signals in the brain and, as a result decreases the pain threshold. The receptors of the brain are able to «remember» the pain, and then respond to pain signals too rapidly. In other words, patients with fibromyalgia perceive any irritation reinforced several times.
In addition, women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than men; there are several risk factors for the disease pain the whole body:
- Peak incidence at the age of 35 years;
- Family history;
- The presence of other rheumatic diseases (eg rheumatoid arthritis);
Because the causes of the disease pain the whole body are not known, treatment is aimed at eliminating or minimizing certain symptoms. Such treatment includes analgesics (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants, hypnotics, and the prevention of stress and other factors causing aggravation of the disease.
